Find the best Minehead walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the West Somerset Methodist Circuit area.

Find A Walk Near Me by using Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Saltrock Minehead

45a, 45 The Avenue, Minehead TA24 5BB, UK – 01643 708221

Small shop clean and presentable but found prices on line cheaper for same clothes

Nice shop, but could make better use of the space.

Beach Hut

Warren Rd, Minehead TA24 5BG, UK – 01643 704050

Lovely little shop and the staff are so nice and friendly. This is my favourite little shop in Minehead 😍

My kids loved their ice cream from here

Channel Adventure

The Adventure Centre, Warren Road, Minehead TA24 5BG, UK – 01643 708715

A big thank you to the Channel Adventure team, from the office team that helped us organise and co-ordinate Rob Viners stag do! Ella and Maddie were brilliant in arranging accommodation and then sorting out alternative arrangements when the campsite let them down! The team even put up and took down our bell tents, which were good quality and in good condition. The campsite was great and really well located! It was quite a joy to not have to worry about taking down the tents on the day we left! Ben and Tom were both very helpful and friendly during the activities. Ben led and explained things clearly and simply, which was helpful for some of the slightly fuzzy heads that we had on Saturday morning. Both Ben and Tom ensured that the activities were kept fun and relaxed, whilst that we were safe at all times! The Arrows, Axes and Ale was great fun and something new that most of us had not done before, but fully enjoyed! The SUP 'n' Scrumpy / Boats, Boards 'n' Beers was great fun! Everyone had a really enjoyable time in the water and the giant SUP was an absolute laugh! Thank you again to you all and we all left thinking it would be great to sort out some future events with your company!

Great place for children's birthday parties! Something different from the usual bouncy castle!

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Site

Hopcott Rd, Minehead TA24 6DJ, UK – 01643 704345

Very quiet site even when full, massive pitches on hardstanding, very clean toilets and showers, wardens are very friendly and helpful. The site is located very close to Minehead and supermarkets, takeaways, the beach etc, you can hear the toot of the steam train every so often, great place.

Pleasant site. We'll situated for walking into Minehead approx 10/15 mins to high street. Local pub about 5 min walk. Serves food. Chinese, Indian and fish and chips even closer.

Duddings Country Cottages

Timberscombe, Nr Dunster, Minehead TA24 7TB, UK – 01643 841123

Nice place. Good pool, great views. Reasonable wifi. Foot access not great if your planning a walking holiday but there is a very handy carpark if you're planning to drive. In theory probably has disabled access in practice there is quite a steep path down from the carpark.

Stayed at Dudding's Country Cottages over the Xmas break. Fantastic setting with well presented accommodation and fabulous facilities for all age groups. Would thoroughly recommend

YHA Minehead

Combe Lodge, Manor Rd, Woodcombe, Minehead TA24 6EW, UK – 0345 371 9033

Friendly place and staff, nice location bit interior but if you have got car then good place to go. Make sure you have got what you need , town centre is 2 miles away.

One of the better hostels in the YHA chain. No shoes policy maintains a nice clean environment indoors while breathtaking scenery enchants you outside. In the middle of lush green forests and paths that lead up to the top of the hill that overlook the sea. Inexpensive self-catering family atmosphere neighbouring butlins holiday camp. WiFi and mobile phone reception in every YHA I've been to so far has been atrocious. It's a forced but pleasant escape away from communication. Payphones are available just take extra 20p coins.

Looking for dog friendly cottages around Minehead? The 'Dog Friendly Cottages' website looks like any other self-catering accommodation website but every single one should be dog friendly! This saves worrying and going through all the small print. However you you may need to check with the owner where the dog is expected to sleep and the what size of dog you can have!
Dog People find this is such a great website. If you have dogs who go on holiday with you just enter TA24 6AN and everything from dog friendly Bed and Breakfasts and Hotels to dog friendly walks and beaches come up. The Dog People site covers Bed & Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Hotels, Self Catering, Pubs & Food, Days Out. Enjoy!

Minehead Buggy Walks, Short Walks, Granny or Grandpa Walks

'Walks with Buggies' is a must for walking parents with young children, babies or even grannies and grandpas! If you would like to walk around West Somerset Methodist Circuit or Somerset just select your nearest town, length of walk and type of walk. You will not only be able to download detailed OS maps free of charge but you can read reviews of walks and their ratings - and add your own afterwards! Enjoy PS This link has been withdrawn. Please watch this space or send a suggestion!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
